Penumbra (astronomy)

Penumbra (astronomy)

In an eclipse, the penumbra is a partial shadow zone that forms around the Earth's shadow cone. It is characterized by the fact that a hypothetical observer, being in it, would only see a part of the Sun.

Thus, during the eclipses of Luna, there are regions covered with shadow and others with gloom. There are also lunar eclipses only in penumbra, in which the difference in brightness of the lunar surface is almost imperceptible to the naked eye, while it can be better evidenced by photographic observation.
