With the name of ocean, the large volumes of water on the Earth's surface are called. There are three large oceans, the Atlantic, the Indian and the Pacific, the latter being the largest. It occupies 165,700,000 square kilometers of area, that is, one third of the earth's surface.
Through the Panama Canal, the Strait of Magellan and the Drake Passage, the Pacific communicates with the Atlantic Ocean. Along its waters we will find more than 25,000 islands, most of them located south of the Ecuadorian line.
The Pacific is not only the largest ocean on the planet, it is also the oldest and deepest. Although the first to cross it was the Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa, it was also the Spanish navigator Fernando de Magallanes who gave it its name. During his trip around the world, Magellan enjoyed an unusually calm Pacific Ocean, hence its name. The reality is very different, since hurricanes, tsunamis and typhoons often occur in the Pacific, as their seabed is covered with active volcanoes.
Within the Pacific Ocean, a good number of seas are included, such as Bering, the Bali Sea, the Java Sea, the Coral Sea, the Japanese Sea, the South China Sea or the East China Sea, among many others. .
Regarding the islands scattered throughout the Pacific, most of them belong to Oceania, as is the case of Polynesia, which includes islands such as New Zealand, Samoa, Hawaii, Tonga, Tuvalu, Rotuma, Easter Island, French Polynesia, Islands Midway or the Cook Islands.
